I just saw Boyhood this weekend. In the film you follow a boy for 12 years of his life. This is not a documentary but a fictional film made over 12 years. Sounds like a gimmic (which it is) but it works so well. It has the feeling of watching a family actually grow over a decade. All the little changes in their lives. Every person who watches it can identify with many moments that probably mirror their own lives growing up. One aspect that really stuck with me were 2-3 moments where you felt like something tragic or terrible was about to happen but then nothing did… Life just went on. Nothing STOPPED the lives of the characters. I think a big part of that is that we’re all conditioned now with TV and FILM to expect HORRIBLE things to happen in films. We expect someone to die, to be abused, to be raped, to be dismembered, etc… But reality doesn’t always have these dramatic moments. Most of the time nothing happens. This film portrays the normality of life better than most I’ve ever seen. It’s the ANTI Forest Gump.I saw it while it’s still in very limited release and every showing was PACKED/SOLD OUT. You will be seeing this film get a wide release and LOTS of Oscar talk for sure. Keep an eye out for it and definitely check it out!
