High court upholds key part of Obama health law

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the vast majority of President Barack Obama’s historic health care overhaul, including the hotly debated core requirement that virtually all Americans have health insurance.

The 5-4 decision means the huge overhaul, still taking effect, will proceed and pick up momentum over the next several years, affecting the way that countless Americans receive and pay for their personal medical care.

The ruling hands Obama a campaign-season victory in rejecting arguments that Congress went too far in approving the plan. However, Republicans quickly indicated they will try to use the decision to rally their supporters against what they call “Obamacare.”

Stocks of hospital companies rose sharply, and insurance companies fell immediately after the decision was announced that Americans must carry health insurance or pay a penalty.

Breaking with the court’s other conservative justices, Chief Justice John Roberts announced the judgment that allows the law to go forward with its aim of covering more than 30 million uninsured Americans.

The justices rejected two of the administration’s three arguments in support of the insurance requirement. But the court said the mandate can be construed as a tax. “Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness,” Roberts said.

The court found problems with the law’s expansion of Medicaid, but even there said the expansion could proceed as long as the federal government does not threaten to withhold states’ entire Medicaid allotment if they don’t take part in the law’s extension.

Unions give Wall Street protesters some oomph

NEW YORK (AP) – A diverse group of powerful unions joined demonstrations near Wall Street on Wednesday, lending focus, credibility and potentially hundreds of participants to a group that started out with a few college students camping out in lower Manhattan.

Among those planning to join the clamor were members of the Chinatown Tenants Union and the Transit Workers Union, the liberal group MoveOn.org and community organizations such as the Working Families Party and United NY. At several colleges across the nation, students participated from afar by heeding organizers’ calls to walk out of classes.

In New York, protesters were gathering at Foley Square, an area encircled by courthouses and named for “Big Tom” Foley, a former blacksmith’s helper who became a prominent state Democratic leader. From there they were to march to Zuccotti Park, the unofficial headquarters where protesters have been camped out in sleeping bags.

Full GOP Debate In Ames, Iowa - August 11th 2001

EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT INTO POLITICS YOU SHOULD HEAR WHAT OUR POLITICIANS ARE TALKING ABOUT ON BOTH SIDES. I THINK OUR TWO PARTY SYSTEM LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED BUT IT’S ALL WE HAVE RIGHT NOW.

Obama says Palestine must be based in 1967 borders

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is endorsing the Palestinians’ demand for their future state to be based on the borders that existed before the 1967 Middle East war, in a move that will likely infuriate Israel. Israel says the borders of a Palestinian state have to be determined through negotiations.

In a speech outlining U.S. policy in the Middle East and North Africa, Obama on Thursday sided with the Palestinians’ opening position a day ahead of a visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu is vehemently opposed to referring to the 1967 borders.

Until Thursday, the U.S. position had been that the Palestinian goal of a state based on the 1967 borders, with agreed land swaps, should be reconciled with Israel’s desire for a secure Jewish state through negotiations.

HMM THIS IS INTERESTING. CONSERVATIVES WILL SPIN THIS BY SAYING THAT OBAMA IS TAKING THE PALESTINIAN SIDE. LIBERALS WILL LOVE IT AND SAY WE SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS LONG AGO.

I THINK IT’S A VERY INTERESTING STRATEGIC MOVE AFTER THE DEATH OF BIN LADEN, AND AFTER REVOLUTIONS ALL OVER THE MIDDLE EAST. THIS IS THE BEST TIME FOR THE US TO ADJUST OUR FOREIGN POLICY AROUND THE ENTIRE WORLD. WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

IT DOESN’T MEAN THE US DOESN’T STILL SUPPORT ISRAEL’S RIGHT TO EXIST. IT MEANS THE US IS TIRED OF THIS AND IT’S TIME TO MAKE SOME SACRIFICES FOR REAL PEACE.

THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS THOUGH. CONSERVATIVES IN ISRAEL WHO FEEL UNDER ATTACK AT ALL TIMES WILL SEE THIS AS OUTRAGEOUS. THEY WILL WANT PEACE EVEN LESS.

PALESTINIANS WHO WANT THE DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL WILL SEE THIS AS A TREND OF THE US BACKING DOWN AND WILL ONLY HOLD OUT FOR SWEETER DEALS.

THE US NEEDS TO STAY CONSISTENT FOR THIS TO WORK AND SHOW THAT WE’RE NOT PLAYING SIDES ANYMORE. WE JUST WANT A SOLUTION.

We need to stop trying to fit this psycho into a political ideology to make ourselves feel better.

‘Assessing the motives of the insane is futile.’

- Edgar Allan Poe

After this terrible tragedy we can clearly see that everyone wants to paint the killer as an Extreme Liberal or an Extreme Conservative. When we first heard of the Congresswomen being shot some of us noticed that she was a Democrat. Your first thoughts might have been that “maybe this was some right wing guy who didn’t like having a Democrat in office” or “maybe its some left wing guy who didn’t think she was liberal enough”.

We think of motives because we want to make sense of chaos. Unfortunately, we do live in a world where violence can erupt at any moment. I’m very lucky that I don’t live in Pakistan where bombings happen on a daily basis. I’m fortunate that I don’t live in Mexico where I could be caught in the middle of the drug cartel wars going on right now. I don’t live in Afghanistan where any number of things could kill me everyday. However, as safe as the USA is, you can still be put in danger by a single psychotic individual.

We try to make sense of this chaos by putting this killer in the same league as our enemies. Liberals will argue that he got the gun too easily and that we need more gun control. Right Wingers will say that he was a communist (simply from his book list) and that we need less gun control so that every person there would have been packing heat and could have stopped him sooner.

If you notice his favorite books it contradicts itself in a lot of ways. Animal Farm is his #1 book. Yet the right wing will only focus on The Communist Manifesto. If people actually read these days they would know that Animal Farm is a story on the failure of Communism in practice. Its a play by play on how Communism has never worked. The right wing is currently trying to deflect any chance that this killer had any sympathies to their brand of politics. I can understand that, however, they do it by trying to make him out to be an extreme liberal terrorist. I disagree with that assumption too.

There was a lot people trying to blame Sarah Palin as well for this poster her people put out. As tasteless as it is, I’m sure that Sarah Palin didn’t want these people harmed. It’s just that one of them was shot. Maybe next time her people will be smarter than this and not make every slogan about war or guns in some way.

I’ve noticed a lot of media outlets throwing in that he read the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf together as if they were part of the same political ideology. The Nazi party was a right wing reaction to the communist growth in Europe. The Communists were their enemy and scapegoat into gaining power. They labeled themselves a socialist party but they were very right wing. They wanted foreigners (illegals) out, more strict security measures against (anti gov) terrorist threats, and ramped up Nationalism (saying how great we are but how shitty everyone who isn’t from here is). It’s obvious that this kid is insane and there’s no real point in looking for motives. Just bugs me when people throw Nazi’s and Communists in the same category. They were polar opposites. They are what happen when you go ALL the way LEFT or ALL the way RIGHT. They hated each other to the core.

I think we try to put labels on ourselves to help create order in our thoughts and lives. At the end of the day they’re only labels though. Its wrong to say this kid did what he did based on what he read, watched, listened to, etc… A crazy person is just a crazy person. I bet he ate Doritos too. Doesn’t mean anything. Just because this killer read some books doesn’t mean he killed people based on what he read. I don’t really think this killer is intelligent enough to develop a political ideology (trust me I watched his Youtube video and it doesn’t make any sense at all). I think he read them because he wanted to learn about the terrible things from our past that caused so much harm and he wanted to know how to duplicate that.
