It seems that writing Alien: Resurrection wasn’t the only time Joss Whedon got to work in the Alien universe: The inclusion of one tiny logo—the Weyland-Yutani Corporation logo—in Firefly reveals that Ripley and Mal Reynolds could’ve gone drinking together.
In the opening sequence of Firefly’s pilot episode, “Serenity,” Nathan Fillion’s Malcolm Reynolds is fighting the Battle of Serenity Valley. And losing. But before he’s forced to lay down his guns, he hops behind a giant anti-aircraft cannon to shoot down an Alliance fighter. And when he powers up the gun, the heads-up-display reveals a very familiar logo in the top part of the screen:

That logo looks a mite familiar, doesn’t it?

Just like that, two of science fiction’s most beloved universes become one. And I feel like a bit of a moron for not noticing it sooner.
Dear Friends,
Well, it’s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can’t wait! But before I become blinded by this “emotion” experience, there’s a few things I’d like to say. Well, type.
People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good — change is exciting. I think — not to jinx it — that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of “the Avengers” gross, I can afford to buy… [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] …a fine meal. But REALLY fine, with truffles and s#! . And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of “Air Bud” that we all feel is so long overdue. (He could play Jai Alai! Think of the emotional ramifications of JAI ALAI!!!!) What doesn’t change is anything that matters.
What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all. A lot of stories have come out about my “dark years”, and how I’m “unrecognized”… I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I’m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I’ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating. I’ve thought, “maybe I’m over; maybe I’ve said my piece”. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y’all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you’re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I’m an alien, not a robot.) So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered.

In which Joss Whedon says, “Thank you,” and makes nerds everywhere start the day off crying. (via laughterkey) —— I would watch his Air Bud reboot. (via popculturebrain) |

How many times a day do you think someone tries to convince Joss Whedon to bring back Firefly? The users of social bookmarking site reddit wasted no time asking Whedon to get the Serenity gang back together during an “Ask Me Anything” chat, and Whedon explained the ruinous steps he’d have to take.
One of reddit’s most intriguing subsections is “Ask Me Anything,” where people with interesting jobs and experiences answer questions posed by the reddit community. This week, Whedon did one of these AMA collaborative interviews, and while it was most likely to tease the release of Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers, he answered all manner of questions about Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Toy Story, and his feelings about politics and art in general.
redditor wjc06 was eager to offer his plan for resuscitating Whedon’s canceled-too-soonFirefly:
Just an idea.
Put Firefly season 2 up as a project on Kickstarter and see how much money you can get to buy the rights and make it happen.
To which Whedon responded:
Step 2: Cancel Castle. Step 3: Cancel Homeland. Step 4: Generally destroy everybody’s careers. Step 5: Avoid Step 2.
Okay, so in order to bring Firefly back, I just have to become a television programming supervillain. This doesn’t sound like an enormous obstacle, except for, you know, the moral issues.
There are a few other gems from the AMA. redditor dbertie asked Whedon if he ever had a hard time killing off his characters, and who was the hardest one to kill. Whedon’s reply:
I actually find it refreshing… delightful…. vaguely arousing….
Actually, I’m, no offense, very tired of being labelled as “the guy who kills people”. Shakespeare (he’s this hot new writer) does it way more than me, and everyone’s all excited about how he, as it were, holds a mirror up to nature, while I’m like the Jason Voorhees of the writing community. Unfair.
Also, probably Buffy’s Mom.
When one redditor complained that, during the San Diego Comic-Con Iron Man 2 panel, the only audience comments directed at Scarlett Johansson were “You’re hot,” Whedon responded:
All I can say is that Scarlett gets to do a lot more than be hot in “Avengers”. It’s definitely dispiriting to have a woman play an heroic role and then be reduced to body parts by fan commentary, but that can only change slowly. And is.
And when another asked for his opinion on fanfiction:
All worthy work is open to interpretations the author did not intend. Art isn’t your pet — it’s your kid. It grows up and talks back to you.
Also, if you’re still committed to the whole “bribing Joss Whedon to create more Fireflyepisodes” thing, the man has now stated on the record that his favorite ice cream flavor is salted caramel.
I am Joss Whedon - AMA. [reddit]

IF THERE WAS ANY WAY TO BRING BACK FIREFLY NOW I WOULD SAY MAKE IT ANIMATED. THE ACTORS COULD DO THE VOICE WORK WITHOUT HAVING TO LEAVE THEIR OTHER JOBS.
