A sunrise in China’s Sea of Clouds
These vintage photos of early car wrecks will make you grateful for crumple zones
The automobile gave individuals a means of traversing great distances quickly and easily, but that convenience sometimes came at a dangerous price. These photographs hit home just how fragile early cars were, and will make you want to thank an automotive engineer.
The Boston Public Library collected these accident photos from the 1920s and 1930s, and while they are (thankfully) bloodless, it’s shocking just how thoroughly these cars fell to pieces, even when the car seems to have merely slipped from the road. The one shot of a car hanging off a bridge over the water also gives a sense of how light these early cars were — a far cry from the heavy cars we drive today, and a good deal more delicate.

This is what it looks like to live “off the grid” in the United States
How far would you be willing to go to minimize your impact on the planet?
Photographer Eric Valli has assembled an absolutely stunning series of images, documenting the lives of people who have decided to live out their lives “Off the Grid.” Valli says he spent a number of years living with four different groups, each one living at a different degree of separation from society.
Writes Valli:
There are growing number of people
who have decided to live light on the earth
to not be a part of problem anymore
I spent the last few years with four of them
striving for harmony with nature
in the most pristine corners of United States.
We’ve included a few examples below, but you’ll want to check out Valli’s site for the entire series. [Spotted on boingboing]

EOSHD Blade Runner - Tokyo (with ColorGHear Color Correction.)
After Effects Color Correction on hacked 44mps GH2 footage shot by Andrew Reid at EOSHD.
I wanted to make the footage have a little more of that Blade Runner look. So I’ve lowered the black levels, and then used my newly developed ColorGHear plug-in for After Effects which fixes everything about GH2 footage that bugs me - in terms of color and texture.
You can compare it to the original footage by the incomparable Andrew Reid (Tokyo Storm) here:

A protective elephant mother fights off a pack of hyenas to protect her calf. The hyenas had pounced on the baby elephant when it became separated from its mother. She stampeded towards the predators, kicking out her feet at the pack, which soon scattered. Picture: James Weis/BNPS
