Michael Dorn wants to write and star in a low-budget Star Trek movie

Have we seen the last of Worf? Not if Michael Dorn gets his way. The Star Trek: The Next Generation star wants to make a brand new low-budget movie, either direct to DVD or for cable TV. He’s writing it himself — he’s already started — and he thinks it could go alongside the big budget J.J. Abrams movies without cannibalizing the audience.

Talking to TrekMovie, Dorn explains:

TrekMovie.com: So where do you see Worf now?

Michael Dorn: He is captain of a ship – a Federation ship. He is out there in the front lines basically chasing terrorists.

TrekMovie.com: So you want to make it edgier? Darker?

Michael Dorn: Totally, totally. I think we will have some of our Star Trek people in it, but mostly new characters. It will be interwoven into the fabric of Star Trek. And also what we going through right now.

TrekMovie.com: When do you think you are going to have your first meeting at CBS?

Michael Dorn: I have couple meetings I want to do before that. First with Rick Berman, who produced all of our shows, just to see what he thinks. Then my manager. And I know people at SyFy. And I’ll just start gathering information. If anything happens it is going to be next year because I have a bunch of stuff to do this year. I have already started writing the script and excuse my language, but it f-ing great.

Let’s hope nobody keeps dismissing Worf’s input this time around.

‘Star Trek 2’ Special Effects Team Heads To Iceland

The USS Enterprise has ventured out to many exotic planets — and even a trip to the center of the galaxy that many would like to forget. But one thing a Star Trek film has never done was film outside the United States.

Until now.

“Star Trek 2” is heading to Iceland. And, at least according to TrekMovie, it’s the first time ever that a Star Trek film has left the country to film anything.

So what could be attracting J.J. Abrams to the country for the first time? Well, it’s actually something the film’s special effects team is interested in — the landscapes.

The fact that “Star Trek 2” was coming to town was first reported by the Icelandic newspaperFrettabladid, which speculated that crews were looking for landscapes to possibly stand-in as Vulcan. Unfortunately, the reporters there must have missed Abrams’ 2009 outing, because the only Vulcan they would need in this film are for flashback scenes.

The second unit filming is being headed up by Roger Guyett of Industrial Light & Magic, according to TrekMovie. It is not clear, however, if Abrams himself will make the trip, but the blog states that the director’s presence is “still being determined.”

Iceland is home to more than 300,000 people, and up until a few years ago, was one of the world’s wealthiest and most stable nations, although it is still very financially and politically stable despite some economic downturns. It’s also a highly developed country where 95 percent of the population is connected to the Internet — more than any other country in the world (including the United States).

Movie studios have been making more and more frequent trips to the country, not just because of its amazing (and almost alien) landscapes, but also because of financial incentives offered by the Icelandic government. The HBO series “Game of Thrones” and the upcoming Ridley Scott film “Prometheus” both filmed scenes in Iceland recently.

There is still no name for the “Star Trek” sequel, but as post-production moves forward, it’s likely an announcement could be made by the end of summer, with a first teaser trailer expected for the holiday film season.

Star Trek 2 News!

Peter Weller, Robocop and Buckaroo Banzai himself, offered some cryptic hints about his character, which according to his agent is a substantial role as some sort of villainous CEO:

“I can’t tell you. I’m sworn to secrecy. It’s something very cool. [On whether he’s playing an alien] No. Do I look like an alien to you? No man. Let me put it this way. I have my own ship.

And Leonard Nimoy reveals just why he recently visited the set, and he claims it has nothing to do with all those rumors that he would be making a cameo as the Spock:

I visited the set one day and that started some speculation about whether I was doing the film. It’s all speculation. I talk to these people regularly. Zachary Quinto and I have dinner whenever we can. We just had dinner three or four weeks ago. I talk to J.J. about family. His parents and I go back a number of years as friends. I knew them long before I ever met J.J. So we talk regularly. I visited the set one day because I had never seen the bridge. When I was in the last film, none of my work was on the bridge of the Enterprise. So I wanted to see the bridge, and the bridge was extraordinary. It’s beautifully designed and put together. We talk. It’s great. I expect that it’s going to be a gigantic film. Look, I think he’s put together a wonderful cast of people. His writers are imaginative and energetic. I think we’re going to see another great Star Trek movie.

Star Trek 2 News: Both Spock actor Zachary Quinto and Scottie actor Simon Pegg have put out tweets strongly suggesting they have finished filming on the sequel, give or take the inevitable reshoots (and maybe a Leonard Nimoy cameo for good measure). Either way, looks like filming is pretty much done. [MTV Movies Blog]
